I have friends who can’t walk out of a bookshop without having bought an armful of books. Luckily for my bank balance, I am generally capable of leafing through a few copies here, reading the first few pages of a volume there, without being consumed by the urge to pull out my purse and dash over to the till. However it’s a whole different kettle of fish when I’m abroad in a country linguistically dominated by a language I’m attempting to learn. I’ve made a ritual of tracking down enormous bookshops – the sort that make you giddy with the sheer number of books – and stocking up on more volumes than I’m realistically going to be able to get through between trips.
