Baron Mór Lipót Herzog (1869-1934) was a passionate Jewish art collector in pre-war Hungary. Over his lifetime, he assembled the Herzog Collection, one of Europe’s great private collections of art and the largest in Hungary prior to World War II. However, the Herzog family’s legacy as patrons of the arts came to a sudden halt during the Hungarian Holocaust, when the Hungarian government, assisted by the Nazi regime in Germany, systematically annihilated its Jewish population and plundered their personal property and cultural treasures.
Featuring more than 300 paintings, drawings, prints and photographs, Portraying a Nation combines two exhibitions: Otto Dix: The Evil Eye, which includes paintings and works on paper that explore Dix’s harshly realistic depictions of German society and brutality of war, and ARTIST ROOMS: August Sander, which presents photographs from Sander’s best known series People of the Twentieth Century, his attempt to document the German people. In painting and photography, these works from a pivotal point in the country’s history reflect both the glamour and the misery of Weimar Republic.

Oft berichtet sie mir von ihren Erfahrungen, die sie dort macht und so erwuchs die Idee, dass ich einen Nachmittag mit Flüchtlingen beim Malen in meinem Atelier verbringe. Es sollte ein Nachmittag des Austauschs und der zeichnerischen Inspiration werden.
Da mein Atelier nicht so groß ist, mussten wir die Teilnahme auf 3 Tandems, bzw. 6 Personen, begrenzen. Ein Tandem besteht aus einem geflüchteten Mensch und einem Local.

Fascinating article and sketches. The train factories were huge in the early industrialisation of the capital city. Conditions were harsh, as I understand it, too.
Wie findet man die touristischen Highlights einer Region?
Nachdem ich festgestellt habe, dass im Internet zwar alles zu finden ist, aber man meistens eine ungefähre Ahnung haben sollte, wo es denn hingehen soll, habe ich mir vor einiger Zeit einen Reiseführer für die Region Brandenburg gekauft. Seither habe ich sehr viele interessante Dinge entdeckt. Meistens beginne ich die Erkundung einer Stadt mit dem Tourismusbüro (siehe hier). Dort erhält man oft umsonst kleine Landkarten des Stadtkerns und der Umgebung.

Eine große Entdeckung war am vergangenen Wochenende das Industriemuseum Brandenburg an der Havel (siehe hier). Es regnete in Strömen und so war nur ein Museumsbesuch möglich.
Ich hatte wieder auf die Mitnahme der Kamera verzichtet und zeichnete im Museum fast ein ganzes Skizzenbuch voll. Wollte ich doch ein Foto machen, so ist mein iPhone – leicht und kompakt – der Beste Partner…

“Inesvigo” (Inconsequential) on YouTube is a constant source of pleasure. The combination of paintings with a musical backing gives a short journey into the imagination and concerns of each artist that he chooses to portray. For instance, I have just discovered the bohemian, metropolitan world of Milt Kobayashi.
These paintings by Kobayashi give a glimpse of what I assume to be New York and perhaps Hawaii. They are interesting as a documentation of a historical and social context which is as vivid of the era as, for instance, Christian Schad is of the Weimar Period. The execution is quite different however and very expressive and not dissimilar from the Plymouth painter, Robert Lenkiewicz. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Lenkiewicz
It is clear that his work is much influenced by the famous French Painters like Degas, Lautrec and Manet. Perhaps indeed some were painted in Paris as the bottles and tablecloths seem to intimate. Often the subjects, treated with moving sympathy seem filled with melancholy -that the Germans call “Wehmutig”.

His work has appeared in the magazines Forbes, Fortune and Reader’s Digest”
The no longer exisiting Anhalter Bahnhof, whose crippled front entrance still holds eerie sway over Stresemannstrasse (former Königgratzer Strasse and then Saarlandstrasse) – looking quite Harry Potter-esque, as if magic trains were still chugging in there in moonglow, -was witness to many a historic event.
One of them took place on May 24, 1913 and marked another beginning of another end. It was to become the very last gathering for the three mightiest people in Europe who would soon send their troops to slaughter each other on the battlefields of the continent. And on those sunny days in May the King, the Kaiser and the Tsar could already sense that something was brewing in the European cauldron and that the cauldron could blow up one day – as it did in Sarajevo only 13 months later.
But for weddings and for funerals all animosities are best forgotten. And…
