Ein Leuchten…

A seasonal poem:-

an alle blauen Himmel, grünen Räume,

THE JEW OF BERLIN: MOSES MENDELSSOHN

Thanks for this useful and interesting post.

Berlin Companion's avatarKREUZBERGED - BERLIN COMPANION

On January 4, 1786 many enlightened people of Berlin mourned the death of the once most prominent German Jewish thinker and father of the German Jewish Enlightenment, Moses Mendelssohn. The first in a long line of great Berlin personalities died at 56 in his house in Jägerstraße surrounded by his wife, Fromet, and their six children. The cause of death was stroke, which would later also kill several other members of his family.

Mendelssohn´s life-long aim was to bring enlightenment to Orthodox Jewish people locked up in ghettos and treated as non-citizens in most of the communities – also in Berlin – and in this way to allow them to become part of the society they shunned and they were shunned by. Having grown up in a small Jewish ghetto in Dessau himself, he decided that only by opening up, learning German…

Changing Times: Lovis Corinth, 1898-1900

A very interesting and informative article, many thanks!

hoakley's avatarThe Eclectic Light Company

Lovis Corinth didn’t just spend his time in Munich drinking red wine and champagne, but experimented in his painting and evolved his mature style. In 1897, he moved studio within Munich, and started to make increasingly frequent visits to Berlin, where he was able to obtain lucrative commissions for portraits. When the Berlin Secession was founded in 1898, Corinth was among its members. By 1900, he was renting a studio in Berlin, and in the autumn of 1901, he closed his studio in Munich and moved to Berlin.

He had no shortage of attractive young women, like Ellÿ (1898), to paint. But he pressed on with his campaign to improve his style and technique.
